Tuba Skinny

Who is (who are... what is... what bees...) Tuba Skinny?

In a nutshell...Tuba Skinny is a BAND. However, that is like saying the Mona Lisa is a "sketch". Like saying the Grand Canyon is just a hole in the ground. Like saying Leonardo da Vinci was just some clever dude.

IMHO Tuba Skinny is ... ONE OF THE GREATEST MUSICAL GROUPS IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE!!!!! Led by cornetist Shaye Cohn, this group is the real-life reincarnation of the "real deal": those musicians and groups who pioneered the New Orleans traditional jazz sound. Ragtime. Authentic Jazz. [You may want to avoid calling it "Dixieland", but that is a whole other topic left for another time.] Residents of New Orleans and frequently seen and heard busking on the streets of the Crescent City, this group was formed in 2009 and is still going strong today!

What can you tell me about Shaye Cohn?

Aside from saying that she (left) is the most delightful cutie (sorry, Shaye), I can honestly say that she is ONE MASTERFUL CORNETIST. I like to think of her as the reincarnation [and I will say that the temptation to invent the word rein-cornet-ion here is MASSIVE] of Louis Armstrong... of Bix Beiderbecke... You get the idea. Even further... and IMHO... there have been 4 *** MUSICIANS *** in my lifetime.
  1. Miles (of course)
  2. Carlos Santana
  3. Jaco Pastorius
  4. ... and NOW... Shaye Cohn

A significant "Oh, by the way...": Shaye is the granddaughter of jazz saxophonist Al Cohn (one of Woody Herman "Herd") and daughter of guitarist Joe Cohn.

Where can I catch them?

In addition to checking them out busking on the streets of New Orleans, you can catch this amazing group...
  • all over the world (tours of France, etc.)
  • on CD
  • YouTube
  • at their web site

When should I see them?

Now, now, now... and... YESTERDAY!!!

PostModern Jukebox

Why do I have this section on PostModern Jukebox?

First of all, I am now a HUGE fan of this musical "collective" (and I use this term because PMJ is WAY more than a band or a show). Check out their Web site to get a feeling for this organization and what they offer. Better yet, search YouTube for PMJ or PostModern Jukebox to be presented with a wealth of entertaining content.

Next, given the thrust of the group -- taking current songs and transforming them into styles of previous generations -- I have found that my playing style as a drummer is right "in sync" with their music. In fact, I was sufficiently interested in the possibility of my becoming a member of PMJ that I contacted Scott Bradlee via email and let him know of my interest. What followed was an invitation to submit an audition portfolio to the casting department of PMJ. Since I haven't heard back (yea or nay) from PMJ regarding my audition, I can only assume that they don't have interest in me as a potential drummer/contributor. Therefore, I feel free to share with y'all that
audition portfolio
